Empowering Future Leaders through the GIIS East Coast Campus MUN

From October 13 to 15, the GIIS East Coast Campus hosted an impressive Model United Nations (MUN) event, bringing together over 160 students representing eight schools across Singapore. The three-day event witnessed young delegates actively engaging in an academic simulation of the United Nations, assuming the roles of delegates from various countries and working tirelessly to develop real-world solutions to global issues within the context of their assigned nations.

The conference saw enthusiastic participation from students representing five international schools, including One World International School Nanyang Campus, Singapore American School, Overseas Family School, GIIS SMART Campus, and GIIS East Coast Campus. Additionally, three local schools from Singapore also participated: Cedar Girls’ Secondary School, Crescent Girls’ School, and Methodist Girls’ School.

The students formed six distinctive committees, encompassing the Economic and Social Council, United Nations Human Rights Council, World Health Assembly, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Futuristic United Nations Security Council. Delegates exhibited their unwavering commitment by delving deep into the intricate agendas of their respective committees, demonstrating meticulous research and engaging in diplomatic dialogues.

This year's MUN was a student-organised endeavour with the theme ‘Youth for Sustainability.’ The event also featured the MUN Refugee Challenge, an annual competition organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). A distinguished guest speaker, Mr Ryann Lai, a representative from the UNHCR, delivered enlightening insights to the attending delegates.

On the second day, an unforeseen crisis was introduced, artfully testing the delegates' quick thinking and directive-drafting skills under time constraints. On the final day, the International Press Corps conducted thorough conferences, meticulously probing the delegates about their countries' positions. The passionate debates and votes on resolutions addressing committee agendas culminated in an enriching experience.

The conference concluded with a closing ceremony, where deserving candidates were honoured with accolades like Best Delegate, Best Position Paper, and even Best Article, conferred by the event's chairs.

Here are a few testimonials from the attendees:

"Chairing at GIIS EC MUN was the best MUN experience I have ever had. Not only did I meet amazing delegates, but I also made tons of friends from different backgrounds and walks of life. The community here is truly very open and accepting. Many core memories were made at this MUN, and I would definitely come back next year in the next iteration. Thank you!" - Jayleen Toh Ying Xuan, UNHRC Vice Chair, Methodist Girls’ School

"GIIS MUN was one of the most entertaining conferences I have ever attended, as everyone was eagerly providing solutions and ideas. Most other conferences are quiet, and people don't talk as much. The actual FUNSC committee was the first time I had ever heard of FUNSC, and I didn't expect such a well-thought-through topic for debate. The whole setting was also great, from the goody bags to the food, it was very well planned." - Rizul Vyas, Delegate of India in FUNSC, Singapore American School

"GIIS EC MUN 2023 was one of the most memorable experiences, where I was given the opportunity to debate and talk about topics that matter to me, make new friends, and immerse myself in the fun and rigour of an academic event. Thanks, ECMUN 2023 for the lasting memories! Can't wait for the conference in 2024!" - Nguyen Huynh Nhat Linh, Delegate of UNHCR in UNHRC, Best Delegate Award winner, Crescent Girls’ School

"It was a great event. The food was absolutely amazing! The flavours, especially in the Indian and Italian dishes, were on point. The study guide for FUNSC was informative and detailed. The environment on the campus was pleasant, and I truly enjoyed the experience!" - Harshith Chinni, Delegate of the USA in FUNSC, One World International School Nanyang Campus

The conference was a testament to the intellectual prowess and diplomatic collaboration of the participating students. However, it was not merely an academic exercise; it also proved to be a vibrant celebration of creativity, talent, and leadership. Initiatives and platforms like the MUN at GIIS exemplify the school's commitment to laying a strong foundation for its students, preparing them to become global leaders of the future.
