GIIS East Coast Campus hosted its highly anticipated Annual Sports Day on August 26, 2023, showcasing students' extraordinary talents, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. The event featured a range of track and field competitions which gave the students an opportunity to exhibit their sporting excellence.
The event commenced with a song rendered by the students to welcome Mr Alexander Duric, a renowned former football player and the principal for Sport Singapore and the ActiveSG Football Academy. He played in the Singapore Cosmopolitan Football League and was noted for being a prolific striker with strong physical presence.
The parents were impressed by the vivacious medley of Zumba, yoga and the song performance rendered by the school choir. The tiny tots of GMP took the most limelight with their adorable display of dance on ‘Waving Flag’.
The students' sportsmanship, endurance, and team spirit were on full display as they participated in various races and sporting events. The track events, featuring various categories, kept spectators glued to the finish line.
While the long jump and shot put events, along with their respective prize distributions, had taken place earlier in the day, the excitement reached its peak during the live 100m and 4x100 relay races. These races featured five categories, including kindergarteners, Grade 1 and 2 students, U10, U12, U14, and U16, with separate competitions for boys and girls.
The event culminated with a closing ceremony, where the dedication and sportsmanship of the participants were duly recognised. Trophies and medals were awarded to the outstanding performers, honouring their unwavering commitment. The winner of the overall trophy was Sunflower House, who displayed a dominant show throughout the event. The march past trophy was awarded to Orchid House.
The 2023 Sports Day at GIIS East Coast Campus proved to be an overwhelming success, leaving a lasting and indelible mark on the memories of students, faculty, and esteemed guests. Such events not only provide a platform for students to showcase their sporting prowess but also instil essential life skills, such as sportsmanship and teamwork, fostering an environment of holistic growth and development.
