Dear parents,
As we all know, Singapore has started to open up slowly albeit with caution which is providing us with some relief. With our Middle School onward fully vaccinated, we still cannot afford to drop our guards and constantly need to adhere to Covid safety protocols.
The French Language Week was celebrated by the students with much enthusiasm and fervor in the first week of August. New studies have proven that learning to appreciate the nuances of a language help students enhance and deepen their capacities for processing information and analyzing the world around, better. We at GIIS EC are constantly trying to deepen the students' understanding and appreciation of language, through activities like TV broadcast and skit, to help them find new sources of joy and a rich world of language to reside in. My own vocabulary has been enriched by students who helped me learn a few words and made sure I articulate them to their satisfaction.
August is a month of celebration. We are privileged to be able to celebrate the National Day of Singapore and the Indian Independence Day in our EC campus. Students across grades took part in the Special Assemblies held to commemorate these special days. The assemblies included patriotic songs and dance and aroused pride and patriotism in young minds. The mere sight of the tricolour and the Indian National Anthem send a surge of warmth in our hearts so strong that our eyes well up. Through these special assemblies we are gradually trying to inculcate in students a love and develop a bond with their motherland.
To reiterate the love for language and bond with motherland, GIIS EC organized Mother Tongue Appreciation Day in the last week of August. Students of PYP 1-5 gathered to listen to a Marathi story narrated by a member of our parents’ community proving yet again that effective storytelling never goes out of fashion. Our heartfelt gratitude to Ms Prerana Kulkarni for sharing her knowledge and engaging the students in a meaningful way. We would request more members of our community to come forward, share their thoughts and ideas with the students so that they can enrich themselves with your wealth of knowledge and experience.
As Albert Einstein once famously said, ‘The mind that opens to a new idea, never returns to its original size.’ It was heartwarming to see this epiphany unfurl before our eyes when the PYP 3 students were touring the Chemistry laboratory. The little scientists were eager to absorb and soak up all the sights and sounds of their new surroundings while asking very pertinent questions. They understood concepts like melting, freezing, condensation and evaporation through hands-on exercises and couldn’t stop gushing about it later on their way home.
If we are conducting activities for the entire school, can the Kindergarteners be left behind? They showed their appreciation for the world they inhabit by hugging a tree around our green campus. They went around the school emphasizing on the importance of planting trees and expressing their gratitude towards trees for providing them with food and shelter. Our green and sprawling campus allows us to let the children be free amidst nature and enjoy nature’s bounty.
The much-awaited Jhankaar and HiQ 2021 concluded amongst much fanfare. I am extremely delighted to announce that we continue to have our winning streak as the EC campus has bagged 2nd position in Sub-Junior category (Saanvi Singh, PYP 2), 1st position in Junior category (Shreyanshi Pradhan, 4B) and 2nd and 3rd position by Nidhi Bhat (7 CBSE) and Sumedha Tiwari (8 CBSE) respectively in Sub Senior Classical category. We finished 3rd in HiQ quiz and heartiest congratulations to Alisha Sambhus (7 CLSP), Siddhanth Subramanian (8 CLSP) and Dave Shejo George (9 CBSE). We will continue to provide the students with a global platform to hone their skills and showcase their talents.
As we draw near to Half – Yearly and Sem 1 exams, I wish all the students luck.
Continue to stay safe!
Warm Regards,
CVK Sastry
