STEAM is a holistic approach to a child’s learning journey. And this time the KG II’s proved themselves as great explorers. They were able to experiment, investigate and understand marine mammals and their secret of survival
Their secret to their adaptation to the coldest weather of Arctic and Antarctic regions is blubber, a thick layer of body fat that comprises up to 50% of some marine mammals.
The KG II’s of GIIS Dubai, conducted an experiment to see if humans can replicate this cold weather adaptation.
Each child was given two zip lock bags and a bottle of Vaseline. Two trays of ice water were prepared in the steam lab. Children filled in one zip lock with Vaseline. They wore the clean zip lock as a glove and kept their hands in the Vaseline zip lock. Children were surprised to hear this and followed as per teacher’s instruction. Now children dipped their hands with gloves in one of the ice trays and simultaneously their bare hands in the other ice tray.
It was amazing to see each child’s reaction. They were baffled at first instant but soon commented “teacher this is soo cold’ instantly removing their bare hand from the ice tray.
With this activity children had first-hand experience on how marine mammals like whales and seals survive in the cold weather. The reason is, they have an inbuilt layer of fat called blubber which provides insulation.
Children were able to integrate their understanding with the theme of the month “All about animals”. The activity laid an interactive platform helping the children to gather, observe, investigate, and understand how the animals live across different habitats and survive in various weather conditions by adapting themselves to their environment.
