“Excellence is never an accident; it is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities.”
Global Excellence day Virtual Quality Circle competition 2020 was conducted by the Global Center for Education Excellence on 17th September 2020. GIIS Dubai participated in the Junior category –grades 5-8. Abigail- Grade 8, Amelie – Grade 7, Aarush – Grade 6 with the support of Ms.Soumya – ICT teacher.
The topic for the competition was ‘My learning journey with digital portfolio using Google sites’. GIIS Dubai presented their report on this topic that they had worked out during our quality circle sessions. Students of grade 6, 7 & 8 had attended a workshop to discuss and identify the problems students face during E-learning classes. It was identified that due to the current pandemic situation, a hard copy of the student portfolio was difficult to maintain and reviewed by the teachers. The project was identified by using Nominal Group Technique. Based on the voting the student portfolio was chosen as the project, to reflect on the learning journey. This insight was voted by the students as the highly recommended problem to be addressed during the e – learning classes.
It started with the analysis, where the fishbone diagram was used and the students were able to discuss about the various primary and the secondary causes and the different problems faced by students such as lack of printers at home to maintain hardcopy portfolios, works of students were not showcased systematically, physical hard copy student portfolios could not be maintained due to the e-learning classes. The final root cause was identified using the Nominal Group Technique where voting was done by the students and the root cause was identified as the lack of machines and materials to develop a student portfolio due to the global pandemic. The final solution was to create a digital portfolio using Google sites. The criteria used was to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each proposed solution. A proper brainstorming session and nominal group technique with voting was done by the students to finalize the best solution. The solution was implemented with a clear action plan. Training was given to grades 6,7,8 to design the digital portfolio and finally all the students have their digital portfolio ready which will be reviewed by the teachers twice in each term.
While the team won participation certificates, it was a great learning experience and opportunity for the students.
