Safety Week at GIIS Whitefield reinforced the awareness about complete well-being of children

Safety is not a gadget but a state of mind. Where the focus is to take all precautions through awareness and guidance to help children understand safety when at school, in the playground, while using gadgets, and the internet. Ideally, safety has a pivotal role in every aspect of life. At GIIS Whitefield, 'Safety of Students' has always been the prime focus and the 'Safety Week' observed in the month of June for all segments was definitely an intensive and extensive learning week on safety in various areas of daily lives.

As you know, safety for Pre-Primary kids comes with a double check in all aspects. The small wonders are to be given a lot of care and attention whether at home or when they are outside.

The Safety week was very informative and at the same time helped students express their knowledge about safety at home and outside with confidence. On day 1, the topic was 'Safety during pandemic - 'I can wear a mask', our little ones were shown video and they also learned how to make a mask using handkerchief. On day 2, it was a good awareness session through videos about how to ensure safety while playing in the playground so that they do not hurt themselves and can play happily. On day 3, the videos focusing on safety using gadgets helped sensitize the kids on how to be connected to gadgets efficiently. On day 4, the tiny tots were shown videos emphasizing on safety with strangers. This was a very thoughtful topic as parents felt that children ought to know about how to deal with strangers who try to connect with undesirable intentions.  On day 5, kids were carefully explained about basic internet safety tips, important points to keep in mind while using gadgets and electrical appliances.

Students of the Primary segment were very excited to share the volume of knowledge learned, by way of photographs after a great learning and activity-centric week around the topic 'Safety'.

Grade 1 learned about the safety pertaining to COVID 19, learned how to boost their immunity naturally, and the basics about cyber safety. The term safety for Grade 2 had more emphasis on maintaining health and hygiene during pandemic times and on how to keep a first aid kit always accessible. Discussions around home safety and stranger safety, health and hygiene, and cyber safety were the topics for Grade 3 with a lot of activities with the materials available at home. Grade 4 students were given a broad awareness of safety in their daily lives. Cybersafety, Food Safety, Healthy, and Junk Food, fire safety, and the precautions during the COVID times were the main topics of discussion complemented by supporting activities to help them understand better. Grade 5 did get a lot of knowledge on how to become internet smart and to exercise precaution while sharing information, protecting information, not expressing negative views on public platforms, and much more. It is important that kids understand they're not on their own when they see content online that makes them feel uncomfortable – especially if it looks like they or someone else could get hurt. They should never hesitate to get help from someone they trust.

The 'Safety Week Programme' was also organized for the Secondary segment. The idea was to create awareness by sensitizing students towards the importance of safety, both indoor and outdoor.

There were many activities spread across the week. Students also learned about COVID safety measures and cyber safety. Students were shown a couple of videos throwing light on the importance of safety. This was followed by the presentations discussing the causes and prevention of accidents at home and outdoor. Students also participated very enthusiastically in the interactive sessions. They were made familiar with the emergency phone numbers to be remembered. The importance of obeying rules while travelling on the roads and the rules for the pedestrians were also highlighted. Students were also informed about the sports and activity precautions. They were given a task to create a bookmark with a tagline on the theme 'Our Safety'.
