“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony”
-Mahatma Gandhi
GIIS Whitefield family celebrated the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi- “Father of the Nation” on 1st and 2nd October 2021 and remembered his historic contributions to the freedom of our motherland. The spiritual and political leader who taught the invaluable lesson of “Ahimsa” (non-violence) has been an inspiration for not only Indians but the whole world and his birthday is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence as declared by the United Nations in 2007 across the globe. On this day, we remembered Gandhi Ji's immortal principles and promised ourselves to follow his great thoughts to create a peaceful world.
A wide array of activities were conducted virtually on 1st October where our tiny wonders leveraged upon their imagination and left us in awe of their creativity. The prayer – “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram……”, which was the favourite bhajan of Gandhiji and often sung at notable gatherings and protests during the freedom struggle was played on this occasion to instil the spirit of secularism and harmony in students. Concepts like “Non-violence” and “Satyagraha” (unflinching adherence to the truth) form the core pillars of Gandhian philosophy and to make the students aware of these ideals, a short narrative featuring glimpses of Gandhi Ji's life and explaining the essential aspects of his teachings was presented. Students were taught how Gandhi Ji used his immovable determination and moral principles to ignite the spark of hope among Indians and broke the chains of colonialism without resorting to any kind of violence.
The Grade 1 students participated in craft-making activity based on understanding the importance of self-sufficiency and freedom whereas, the Grade 2 students engaged in a fun activity that involved learning the cruciality of healthy eating which was widely propagated by Gandhiji. Students were also shown some inspirational quotes by Gandhiji and asked to depict them through illustrations which highlighted how they perceived them and helped in boosting understanding.
Several other activities like watching a short video on the 3 Wise Monkeys of Mahatma Gandhi, bookmark making on his quotes and going through unknown facts of his life were also organized to reinforce the messages and values upheld by Gandhiji.
On 2nd October 2021, Principal sir along with other teachers and staff paid tribute to Gandhiji and planted saplings around his statue situated in the school premises to animate his dream of sustainable living and protection of the environment. As a part of the Global Indian Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Universal Value (MGCUV), GIIS has always ensured that each of its actions is a reflection of Gandhiji’s virtues. Our teachers and faculties are committed to shaping young minds according to Gandhian principles and ingraining his life-enriching teachings in every student’s academic journey.
The 152nd Gandhi Jayanti was an extremely joyous event where we commemorated the philosophical and pragmatic ideals of our beloved Bapu and vowed to follow the path illuminated by him to make this world a better place for everyone.
