Gone are the days when ‘Coding is for the grown-up children was the belief. The tiny tots are sharp and smart to learn things quickly and coding when taught in a light and fun manner, they enjoy as well as get the concepts around day-to-day kindergarten studies.
GIIS Whitefield is the first campus across all GIIS India campuses to have initiated the Coding Module customized for kindergarten children.
After quite a lot of creative research and discussions, the Pre Primary department teachers, under the guidance of Ms. Preetha D’Mello (Head Mistress, GIIS Whitefield), presented a creative and innovative learning methodology wherein Coding could be part of their Global Montessori Plus curriculum. This is a thoughtful step to help little children think like computer programmer.
The Coding curriculum was introduced as a pilot project in GIIS Whitefield that were based on
fun hands-on games and virtual activities and are designed based on depending on the age and skills of the children. The concepts of coding are primarily around sequencing, algorithm, debugging, loop, if then conditional, and decomposition through activity/project-based learning. The activities are designed in such a way to help children develop and appreciation for how things work.
After experiencing the benefits of coding for children, the parents were ushering with praise and appreciation. After the streaming positive feedbacks, the Coding for Kids in curriculum stated by GIIS Whitefield has been shared across all GIIS campuses. It would be quite inspiring to watch the little stars of kindergarten practice easy coding tips in their everyday life.
“Coding in early years at GIIS Whitefield is an innovative approach to introduce coding activities both with and without the screen, empowering children to make logical choices and apply problem-solving skills.” (Ms. Preetha D’Mello - Head Mistress, GIIS Whitefield)
Parents Testimonials stating Interesting Key Takeaways
“This year our son was introduced to coding classes at a very young age. The classes were very interesting and our son, Prithvin was very excited to learn to code. The coding concepts taught by GIIS Whitefield teachers were simple, easy, and systematic approaches. To teach the children about coding, they used day-to-day activities like planting a tree, brushing teeth, etc., which made the kids understand the logic easily. Our son thoroughly enjoyed the coding classes. – (Mr.Harish S & Ms. Annapoorni A V- Parents of Prithvin Harish)
The concepts of ‘Coding’ are being imparted in regular education for the students of kindergarten at GIIS. The concepts introduced in the class have surprised me, as the teaching was exceptional. The basic steps of ‘Coding’ were explained and taught in very simple but effective methods that were very easy for children to grasp. The concepts of sequencing, basics of the algorithm, and debugging were taught using very simple day-to-day examples that kids can easily relate to and understand. Simple kids-friendly concepts were introduced which enhance their thinking ability, build their confidence in problem-solving and individual decision-making. The colourful presentations used in teaching the children were very effective and interesting. I wholeheartedly appreciate the efforts of the teachers, in conveying the ‘Coding’ concepts to the children. Thank you. (Ms. Sireesha Suram - Parent of Krithik Sai)
As part of the coding classes, teachers also email coding worksheets in order to reinforce the basic coding concepts learned in the activities. The exciting Coding curriculum in GIIS is all set to surprise the little ones in the new academic session.
