Future Coders being nurtured early-on at GIIS Bannerghatta

Coding for kids not only helps improve their mathematical and writing skills but also gives them valuable skills in life and eventually in the workforce.  There are various reasons why coding is important to learn and why coding should be taught in schools from an early age. The earlier children learn to code, the better their chance at success. No wonder “Coding” is the new buzzword in today’s digital age. It is important for kids to understand and be able to work with the technology around them. Coding enhances problem-solving skills and analytical thinking wherein they learn to anticipate problems that are likely to emerge.

GIIS Bannerghatta SMART Camus has been the frontrunner in introducing innovating teaching methods and Coding has been added to the portfolio to make learning fun and interesting. As it is said “You have to catch them Young”, thus began the introduction of coding through activities for our Pre-Primary Segment, the first one being sequencing. Our Nursery kids understood sequencing by arranging two different types of Pasta and understood how to copy a pattern. KG 1 students had fun sequencing different materials making the best use of the things round them like spoons and bowls or vegetables. They sequenced according to the count shown and also played sequencing the activity cards like “Daily Routine” to get ready for the class. KG 2 students enjoyed sequencing the crayons matching the colours displayed for them on the screen. Also, they learnt the step-by-step way to complete an activity with good results by making “The Jam Sandwich”.

Coding helps develop Creativity, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Math process, Perseverance, Self – Confidence, and much more. And our tiny tots forayed into the world of coding with aplomb.

Grade 1 children were made to understand the basic coding concepts with Robogarden during their IT classes. Grade 2 & 3 had already mastered the basic concepts of coding in grade 1 so they were made to understand some higher-order coding in Minecraft. Kids loved and enjoyed coding in this play way platform where they get to see the characters moving and doing tasks according to their instructions. This was truly a great creative outlet to express themselves too.

Coding is here to stay at GIIS Bannerghatta and will find its way into our school’s curriculum in myriad ways. There will be creative ways to engage and integrate this with other streams and we are all geared up for more. This just goes to prove that a good skill gained doesn’t just remain a passing fad but will get embedded as a way of life and make them future-ready netizens.
