The Global Indian International School, Ahmedabad, a signatory of UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) took an initiative to raise awareness for environmental protection through its ‘No Plastic Week’. A range of activities was conducted for the students of GMP to Grade 5 from 25th to 29th July 2022 to sensitize them about the hazards of plastic and to reduce plastic pollution. 

In this context, parents were instructed to send the lunch in steel tiffin boxes. The kindergartners made bags using cloth and newspapers, while the students of Grade 1 and 2 segregated the plastic and non-plastic materials during a class activity. 

The students of Grade 3 to 5 made posters with the message -’ Avoid Using Plastic’. In addition to that, the ‘Trash to Art’ contest was organized wherein the children had to collect plastic materials and turn them into art projects. 

Today, plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues and the ‘Plastic Free Week’ observed by GIIS Ahmedabad aims to sensitize the students about this problem and help them identify and provide solutions for the same. 

Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Caesar D’silva, Principal of GIIS Ahmedabad said, “The usage of plastic has made it one of the single largest polluters choking the life on earth and water. This ‘No Plastic Week’ is an initiative to motivate the students to make environmentally conscious choices like carrying a cloth bag while shopping, saying no to plastic straws, and segregating waste. We believe that this was a small step taken by the team of GIIS Ahmedabad with a large impact towards the sustainable development goals."
