GIIS Ahmedabad celebrates 152nd Gandhi Jayanti with the theme of ‘Sacrifice’

Global Indian International School (GIIS) Ahmedabad celebrated Gandhi Jayanti with the theme of ‘Sacrifice’ or “Tyag’ to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Over 2800 students came together to celebrate the day with great zeal, enthusiasm, and patriotic feeling.

The programme commenced with Bapu’s favourite hymns, ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ and ‘Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye’. The students from GMP to Grade 5 celebrated the day with the ‘Joy of Giving’ activity where they shared food, clothes, and other necessary items with those less privileged. A ramp walk with parents was organized on Gandhian principles.

Several interesting activities were also organized for Grades 6 to 8 to mark the day, such as role-play on values of Mahatma Gandhi, wall of gratitude, etc. The students in senior grades commemorated the day by writing essays on ‘Sacrifice’ and ‘What a fourth Gandhian monkey would represent’, as well as participating in poster-making activities on the theme.

A brief introduction of Gandhiji and his role in achieving freedom for India was given by the teachers. The students were also shown informative films. As a gesture of love and respect for India's beloved leader, a special virtual tour of Gandhi Ashram was set up for the youngsters to celebrate his birthday.

On the occasion, Mr. Caesar D'silva, Principal, GIIS Ahmedabad says, “At GIIS Ahmedabad, our emphasis is not just academic excellence, but we also nurture our students emotionally and spiritually. We are guided by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in this endeavour. The school has a Mahatma Gandhi Centre For Universal Values (MGCUV) operating within its Campus. Through universal values like self-reliance, cleanliness, peace, truth, non-violence and respect for others included in our curriculum and MGCUV activities, we teach our students to imbibe these to build their character”.

This year’s theme for Gandhi Jayanti celebration was designed to teach the students the importance of sacrifice in life, especially in today’s times. We believe that sacrifice and a sense of doing right empowers one to do better in life.
