Spellathon 2020-2021 @GIIS Abu Dhabi

Spelling, the art of correctly assembling words from their letters, is one of the essential components of successful writing. Being confident at spelling leads to confidence in all aspects of literacy. Learners who feel confident with letters and word patterns are able to read and comprehend more complex texts. They also have the necessary language tools to better convey their own ideas through both written and verbal communication.

Participating in a spelling competition may be hard work. However it can also be a lot of fun, with many unexpected rewards for all facets of life. Spellathon was conducted for the students of Grade 1 – 4 in GIIS, Abu Dhabi to develop a love for spelling and vocabulary.

The students were all tested individually for the first two rounds of Spellathon. In the first round they were orally asked to spell out five words. Those who qualified for the first round moved to the second round where they were tested on their several linguistic skills. The qualifiers of the second round moved on to participate in the final round. The competition had two categories: Sub-Junior category (Grade 1 and 2) and Junior Category (Grade 3 and 4).

It was a delight to see the confidence with which the participants competed in the final round. Students participated with great enthusiasm and duelled through the toughest words to prove their mettle. In the final round, the students had five different sub rounds. The different sub rounds were Jumbled Up, Spelling Fun, Guess It, Hangman and Rapid Fire Round. The competition made students aware of spellings and the usage of many unfamiliar words. It was a wonderful learning experience not only for the participants but also for their peers and served to enrich their vocabulary. The Vote of Thanks was given by Ms Shabista Surve – Primary Section Head.

The 1st position from Sub-Junior Category (Grade 1 and 2) was awarded to Prasanna Muthuchamy, 2nd position was awarded to Thrisha Vishak and the 3rd position was awarded to Jiya P Jayas. Among the Junior Category (Grade 3 and 4), the 1st position was awarded to Advay Rajesh, 2nd position was awarded to Hanan Faisal and the 3rd position was awarded to Annapoorna Harish.
