In 2012, as GIIS celebrates 10 years of establishment, I join in the celebration with a special significance – completing a decade of teaching in this fine institution. The school has grown from the concept of a premier destination for students to the realisation of a prestigious and internationally recognised institution.

Teaching was a career I had always wanted, never having thought I would venture into any other field. I yearned to be in the classroom and follow my dream to teach. When such an opportunity became available in Singapore, I knew it w6as the right one for me. It was very exciting to work for the only Indian school in Singapore in 2002. I initially signed on to teach at the ‘Indian Central School’ (as GIIS was formerly known as) based at Mount Sophia. Here, the atmosphere was relaxed but the spirit of excellence and drive for progress was well defined. I achieved a significant milestone establishing GIIS’ first kindergarten, often with limited resources, as is common with any new venture. The task was challenging, but nonetheless, a great learning experience for me too. The management was very supportive and my fellow teachers were a great source of strength. It soon became like a family. I recall one instance when Mr Temurnikar mentioned to me that his dream was for our kindergarten to become a standard for the industry, and today I strongly believe that his dream has come true.

At the Primary level in GIIS, I experienced significant career development opportunities and expertise in a short period of time when I was entrusted with more responsibilities. I have always liked to express myself creatively and got many opportunities to do so at the school when I spearheaded several end-of-year celebrations, art events and field trips. One of my happiest moments at GIIS was on our first annual day at the NUS Auditorium. I recall the finale when children were singing the popular, “We Are the World”. It was so moving that Dr M P Chhaya (Member, Advisory Board, Global Schools Foundation), stood up and joined the students in dancing and singing. Being an integral part of the event, it was thrilling to see the appreciation for our first ever annual day!

I cherish the direction my career has taken at GIIS over the years. I have spent a significant part of my professional life here and grown as a person, with constant learning. I have been lucky to be able to work with very capable colleagues who inspire! GIIS is home for me and I feel extremely proud to be a GIISian. As a Primary Coordinator, teacher and colleague, I look forward to GIIS’ bright future.
