Third Inter-GIIS Chess Championship

Chess Championship

The students of GIIS Tokyo are ready to represent their campus at the Third Inter-GIIS Chess Championship. A very excited bunch of chess players are all set to board the plane to travel to Surat in Gujarat, the second-largest commercial hub of western India after Mumbai. GIIS Surat is hosting the chess championship and the students from Surat are eagerly waiting to meet their friends from Tokyo.

The objective of these inter-geo competitions are not only aimed towards increasing the confidence of the students, but also focused towards developing the personality of the students by lending them an exposure into different cultures and thereby, promoting collaborative learning.

The chess players of GIIS Tokyo have been practising chess, sharpening their skills of visualisation and analysis. Analysis consists of three sub -skills: calculation, evaluation and pruning. It requires a systematic approach that does not miss any key moves and eventually evaluating positions reached by calculating alternative lines. The students of GIIS Tokyo are looking forward to participate in this much awaited game of chess.

TEAM PLAYES

“This is just the beginning for my students. The most important tool for playing chess is to have a cool and analytical mind. They are training for the same and in years to come, I look forward to nurturing more chess champions from our campus.” Suhani Kudwa, Chess coach, GIIS Tokyo.

“I am more than overjoyed to see my students participate in the Inter-GIIS competition. I wish them all the best and look forward to them coming back richer with experience and knowledge. The competition is not just about winning and losing, but a larger understanding of the spirit of sportsmanship and comradery.” Ms. Rajeshwary Sambathrajan, Principal GIIS Tokyo.

Shogi, in its present form was played as early as the 16th century. Chess, had disappeared during the World War II era and in 1962, Japan held its first international chess tournament, organized by the Japanese Chess Federation, in Yokohama. It was won by the Japanese player Nobuhiko Sakaguchi. Their first national chess tournament took place in 1969.
