Syed Aleeza of grade 6 emerged as the youngest ever winner of 2018 GIIS Tokyo, Spelling Bee Competition conducted at the school level in January 2018. Aleeza will represent the school at the 9^th Japan Times Spelling Bee competition which will be held in March, 2018. As a school champion, she also received a free one-year membership to Britannica Online for Kids (a $74.95 value).

The competition witnessed participation of a total of 42 students from grades 3-8. These students were the winners of the class-level competition that was held in November 2017.

As a part of preparing the students for the competition, a list of 450 words was issued to the students to memorize. The students were advised to make use of a dictionary, preferably the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (www.merriam-webster.com), in order to find the correct pronunciation of the words. 

Avantika Karikalan of grade 6 and Anushka Deshpande of grade 8 finished 1^st and 2^nd runners-up respectively. The students stunned the audience by correctly spelling some very difficult words beyond the 450 word-list issued to them. 

The competition is intended to promote correct English usage in the students and increase their vocabularies.
