Syed Aleeza of grade 6 emerged as the youngest ever winner of 2018 GIIS Tokyo, Spelling Bee Competition conducted at the school level in January 2018. Aleeza will represent the school at the 9th Japan Times Spelling Bee competition which will be held in March, 2018. As a school champion, she also received a free one-year membership to Britannica Online for Kids (a $74.95 value).

The competition witnessed participation of a total of 42 students from grades 3-8. These students were the winners of the class-level competition that was held in November 2017.

As a part of preparing the students for the competition, a list of 450 words was issued to the students to memorize. The students were advised to make use of a dictionary, preferably the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (www.merriam-webster.com), in order to find the correct pronunciation of the words.

Avantika Karikalan of grade 6 and Anushka Deshpande of grade 8 finished 1st and 2nd runners-up respectively. The students stunned the audience by correctly spelling some very difficult words beyond the 450 word-list issued to them.

The competition is intended to promote correct English usage in the students and increase their vocabularies.
