Students collaborate through video conference on disaster management

GIIS Bannerghatta

The Grade 9 students of GIIS Tokyo had an amazing opportunity to collaborate with one of the most prominent girl’s residential senior secondary schools of India, Birla Balika Vidyapeeth. This school is aiming to get accredited by The British Council for the International School's Award for the year 2017-2021.

The students of GIIS, Tokyo had an interaction with the students of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth via a Skype call in December, 2017. GIIS, Tokyo was requested to participate as a partner school for a British Council Project on Disasters and Disaster Management in Japan & India. This project will be certified by the British Council.

For the project, the students from the Birla Balika Vidyapeeth School presented the following topics:

1) The Bhopal Gas Tragedy (considered the world's worst industrial disaster), its management and its after effects.

2) Videos of the street play on case studies of the Bhopal disaster and the earthquake in Gujarat (Bhuj Earthquake 2001).

3) Videos of evacuation done for fire safety in their school.

Under the tutelage of Ms. Yasmeen Jahir, Head- Department of Social Science, the Class 9 students of GIIS, Tokyo focused on:

  1. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster through a PowerPoint presentation.
  2. The students included statistical evidence about the losses incurred in terms of human lives, management of disaster and Japan’s early warning system. The students even incorporated their first-hand experiences when they actually faced the disaster in 2011.
  3. A mock drill for the earthquake was also shared by the Tokyo team.

This collaborative learning experience enhanced the understanding of global issues by the students.
