Science session between GIIS Tokyo and GIIS Surat Oct. 25, 2013

Use of video conference in the classrooms is an evolving teaching method that enhances learning from kindergarten to high school. GIIS has been successfully running these sessions on a weekly basis for over a year now, to make learning more effective.

One such interactive session was conducted between GIIS Tokyo and GIIS Surat on natural fibres. Tokyo made a presentation on ‘Silk; Is it eco-friendly?’ Students started with the origin of silk, traditional and regular process of obtaining silk, role of animal right activists and their influence in finding a method of obtaining silk without killing the worms. This is also known as Peace Silk or Ahimsa silk. The students further explained the use of silk and its worth in making the exquisite traditional dress of Japan, the Kimono. As a part of Japan’s culture and heritage, the Kimonos are passed over from one generation to the other, which can be looked upon as an initiative to preserve their inheritance. Students of GIIS Tokyo exhibited a beautiful Kimono.

GIIS Surat presented on the topic of ‘Cotton’. They started with the history of cotton farming, how textiles have grown as an important business vertical across the globe and the natural means of weaving thread out of the cotton pod and finally the loom and art of weaving. It was an interesting presentation. Students of GIIS Surat demonstrated the spinning of the yarn over the hand tool Charkha or the spinning wheel and also showed different patterns of weaving.

It was an enriching session for the students of GIIS, bridging the gaps between two countries through just a simple lesson of science.
