21st June: The world unfurled its yoga mats on Sunday, with millions across the globe turning out to celebrate the first International Yoga Day. It is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world. The Summer Solstice was suggested by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the International Day of Yoga, recognising the ancient Indian science@aps@s "holistic approach to health and well-being."
GIIS Surat celebrated its first World Yoga Day at the school campus where students from Grade IV to IX participated and performed various types of Yoga forms. The programme commenced with a speech in English, followed by a shloka recitation by Ms. Neelam. After the warm-up exercises the students were all ready to perform Yoga asans like Padmasana, Bhadraasana, Shashankasana, Pashchimotana asana, Trikon asana. The students performed some standing postures like Tada asana, Vruksh asana, Ardh chakra asanas, Trikon asanas followed by anulom vilom pranayama. They finished the entire cycle with asanas like Chakra asana, Pawanmukta asana, Salbha asana, Bhujangasana.
The day ended with a promise, "Let us pledge to make Yoga an integral part of our daily lives."
Sports being an important area of expertise in students of GIIS Surat, the practise of Yoga would shape the personality as well as the agility in the children. A complete balance of mind, body and soul.
