GIIS celebrates hundred years of Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa

M. K. Gandhi

“I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test;

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Will it restore him to a control over his own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to Swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?

Then you will find your doubts and yourself melting away."
- M. K. Gandhi

After returning from South Africa, Gandhi established Satyagraha Ashram in Ahmedabad to serve the country with universal welfare from his own place. The message is ‘Serving your own people is serving the whole Universe’. Gandhi spent almost 21 years in South Africa struggling on behalf of the people of Indian origin completing identifying with them and their problems. But Gandhi finally decided to return to India in 1915. The message of his return is ‘never forget your roots’. Despite his live-contact with India and its problems Gandhi took the advice of Gokhale seriously after his return from South Africa. He went around the country to understand and identify people’s problems.
