With the purpose of inculcating in students, the virtues of “Creativity, Innovation and Problem Solving”, as imbibed in Gem five of the Nine Gems model, the Innovation fest was organised for students from classes 1 to 12 on 29 and 30 July 2016 at Global Indian International School (GIIS), Queenstown Campus, Singapore.
‘The Inn Joy’ Festival
The plethora of activities planned for the fest aimed to tap into the core of students’ creative minds, motivating them to see things in new perspectives and enabling them to develop into future “innovators”. ‘The Inn Joy’ festival was organised for students of classes 1 to 6. The youngest members of the GIIS family participated in an information session by a team of individuals from Earth Society, Singapore, which is a non-profit organisation that aims to protect the environment. The students were exposed to the concerns of global warming, a phenomenon that urgently prompts the need for sustainable development. The session included the presentation of videos on Arctic ice melt, floods, increasing sea levels, followed by a quiz.
Students designed recycled dolls
In the next programme, all students from classes 1-3 also participated in an innovative programme which included subjects such as English, Mathematics and Art. Using recycled materials, students designed a doll representing a country. The activity was concluded with a show and tell session about the doll designed.
Innovation workshop
At the Innovation workshop, ‘Disruptus’ an innovative game was organised for classes CBSE 7 and 8 and IGCSE 8 on 23 July. The students were challenged to improve, transform, disrupt and create objects/ideas from cue cards provided to them. This group activity also encouraged them to work collectively and inspired team spirit. Students came up with some very innovative ideas to change the objects.
The “Amazing Science Challenge” was conducted for the students of classes 9 and 10 where the students prepared models from recyclable household materials. The models were created with various themes of Innovation, including, sustainable development, environment and health.
Mr Wg Cdr Sabharwal shared insights on Aviation industry
For the students of classes 11, 12 and IB year 1, a two-part session of expert talks in the field of aviation was organised. The first talk was delivered by Mr Wg Cdr Sabharwal, a post-graduate in Aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and MSc in Defence Studies from Madras University.
Mr Sabharwal is an elected Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and at the Aeronautical Society of India and has more than 20 years of teaching experience at both graduate and post-graduate levels in various engineering colleges. His session focused on the various career options in the field of aviation.
Dr. RajKumar Pant interacted with students
This was followed by another interactive session with Dr Rajkumar Pant, a PhD degree holder in Aerospace Engineering. Dr Pant has published and presented more than 160 scientific papers in international journals and conferences, and visited several top ranking institutes and universities all over India and the world. He is a regular visitor of several schools and engineering colleges to interact with students and to conduct Lecture-cum-Demonstrations on various topics related to Aviation and Aerospace Engineering. Dr Pant conducted a highly interactive session with the students and appreciated the response and the intellect of our students.
Hackathon 2K_16
Further, in alignment with the integrative learning methodology, the departments of Mathematics and Information Technology also organised activities to tap into innovative potential of the students. The IT department, as part of its IT week activities, held Hackathon 2K_16 on 29 and 30 July. The event that saw enthusiastic participation by over 125 students, culminated in the development of 15 apps and 8 games, animations and UAV designs, each.
Maths week
In an innovative approach taken by the students from the Mathematics Department, they were challenged to prepare models and games based on topics in Mathematics, an idea unique and innovative in itself. This activity was in addition to the various activities organised by the Mathematics department as part of its Maths week. The models and games designed by the students were showcased to arouse their thinking abilities.
Overall, the students participated actively and enthusiastically in all the events that were conceived with an aim of creating in them the ability to think innovatively.
