GIIS students go bald to support cancer awareness
Students from Global Indian International School, (GIIS) supported the Children’s Cancer Foundation’s (CCF) Hair for Hope effort with 33 shavees going bald in support of children with cancer.
The event was held at Vivo City this year from 30 – 31 July 2016. Students’ supported this event with thousands of other men, women and children, to support the cause to create awareness of childhood cancer. Hair for Hope is the CCF’s call to the public to go bald. Through this symbolic gesture, shavees helped to spread awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore and assured the affected children that they are not alone in their fight against cancer and raise funds to help affected children and their families.
The students who participated were aged 7 to 17 years which included 6 girls, all from Global Indian International School (GIIS). Together, the GIIS students raised an astonishing sum of SGD$ 3898.50 for the Children Cancer Foundation (CCF). Two parents also participated in the event. The initial call to action for this cause included presentation in the school assembly, class to class campaigning, email to all the parents across the 3 campuses of GIIS and many more activities started showing results - the number of people who were interested to find out more started increasing, and so did the sign ups.
“I have participated in two previous editions of the Hair for Hope event, shaving my head and raising funds in support of cancer in children. Both have been among the most humbling experiences of my life. This year, I decided to do more than just participate as an individual shave. I started an initiative to enrol as many of my fellow students as possible in this noble cause,” said Aashay Chouhan, Class 12, fellow GIIS Student.
The success of the initiative is a matter of pride for all the students and all those who participated in this event to go bald, it gave all students an indescribable sense of achievement.
