GIIS Queenstown Campus became the focal point of Lunar New Year celebrations with the Queenstown Community Centre (CC) hosting two events in the school for more than 6000 Singaporeans. The Lunar New Year Lunch 2013 for Senior Citizens was organised by the Queenstown CC on February 16 and the Lunar New Year Celebration Dinner on February 17. Both events had Dr Chia Shi-Lu, Member of Parliament, Tanjong Pagar GRC presiding as Guest of Honour.

The Chinese New Year is the most important festival for the community in Singapore as it heralds the beginning of the New Year. The traditional festival is ushered in with a much awaited family reunion dinner and festive celebrations lasting 15 days. The celebrations on February 16 and 17 at the GIIS Queenstown campus included special Chinese dance performances and grandly organised luncheon and dinner respectively. On both occasions, the Community Centre leaders gifted Hong Bao or cash envelopes to Senior Citizens and community members accompanied by the customary oranges for each guest. The community members were overjoyed by the special treat. Dr Chia Shi-Lu addressed members of the community and grassroots leaders and greeted the residents with Gong Xi Fa Cai on both the occasions.

The GIIS Queenstown Campus is a hub for the local Queenstown community. Apart from the very popular yoga programme hosted there on Saturdays and attended by local residents in large numbers, it is also a popular venue for festival celebrations, promoting community support and integration.
