Team Environment of Global Indian International School represented the school at the Earth Fest, Singapore’s biggest sustainability festival, which was held at Marina Barrage and organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) among many other non-profit organizations.

The participation was part of GIIS’s initiative to spread awareness on products that are harmful to the environment, like Styrofoam cutlery which is cheap and easy to handle, but release toxic fumes upon use. GIIS was the 57th school to be a part of the Eco-Schools Programme, an international initiative of WWF.

The fest had over 100 stalls including a food fair, a farmers’ market, a green carnival and even a film screening facility. As an Eco school, GIIS students also put up a stall that showcased information on various projects conducted on the prevention of Styrofoam accompanied by informative and interactive games for the visitors. “Learning about the work other schools are doing in Singapore to promote sustainability was indeed very inspiring,” the participating students said.

Many environmental enthusiasts came together and narrated their own stories on their efforts to make the environment better.

“As the future generation, it was very motivating to hear how others are working to enhance our surroundings and see change in the world. This festival has enlightened our minds and hope we can together make the world a better place to live in,” the students said.

Team Environment also conducted various other awareness programmes as part of this initiative of spreading awareness. A flash mob was held in the school canteen, where slogans were displayed and banners were unfurled to create awareness on the negative impacts of the usage of Styrofoam on the environment and human health.

The main project conducted in GIIS was the Bring-Your-Own-Box Plan (BYOB) where the Styrofoam cutlery used at the canteen was replaced by students and teachers bringing their own boxes from home.

A group of GIIS students also visited Mexico recently, and presented their projects related to reduction in usage of Styrofoam to 1500 students from 44 countries.
