GIIS Queenstown Campus conducted Annual Sports Day 2014-2015 ‘Sports Symphony’ with grandeur and exhilaration on 27 February 2015 at the Queenstown Stadium. Students from nursery to Class 12 participated in the various sporting events in a two-day sports carnival. Some of the events were held on 26 February in which students from Class 9 till Class 12 participated. During an Inter House Athletics Meet, winners in Long Jump, Track & Field, Short Put, and so on, where awarded with a certificate and medal on 26 and 27 February 2015, respectively.

The Guest-of-Honour (GOH), Mr Hisato Yuto and Principal, Ms Madhu Khanna unfurled the school and the sports flag. During the ceremony, Mr Yuto said, “Sports needs no language,” and declared the Annual Sports Day open. Followed by Torch Run by students, who won laurels for GIIS in sports like basketball, cricket, badminton, tennis, soccer and athletics. The school’s Sports Captain led the team to the oath-taking ceremony. The field events started with March Past with the secondary and primary pupil leaders leading followed by the different houses and the house-captains.

The young champions were exposed to a plethora of events such as track events including various races and relays and martial arts. The students put up an excellent display through the aerobics drill. They had practiced relentlessly and were waiting to showcase their skills to their families. Similarly, the taekwondo students exhibited high levels of discipline, concentration and perseverance through their well-rehearsed moves. All the performances indicated the hard work and dedication of the students and teacher-in-charges who had trained them with utmost diligence.

The atmosphere was very exciting with the cheering teams shouting out loud and waving their brightly coloured pom-poms to boost the morale of their house members. The audience cheered as they watched the track and field events and revelled in the indomitable spirit of each sprinter trying to secure a winning spot for their respective houses. The most awaited moment was the declaration of the best house. Student competed and represented their respective houses viz., Chrysanthemum, Hibiscus, Orchid and Sunflower with a great spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork. In the March past, Sunflower House was declared as the first winner and Chrysanthemum as the runner up. The winners for both field and off-field events were felicitated with medals and certificates. Chrysanthemum House was declared as the Champion House of 2014-2015 with (304 points) with maximum number of medals followed by ‘Orchid House’ (279 points) as the runner up. After the prize distribution of primary and secondary by GOH Mr Yuto, GIIS Country Director (Singapore) Mr Rajiv Vasudeva, Ms Khanna and Vice Principal, Rekha Varghese followed by the Grand Finale by students from classes 3 to 8 with pom-poms and duster as props.

Mr Vasudeva, thanked the teachers and staff, parents and students for celebrating sports. He congratulated all and said that every child who participated is a winner. Dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr Atul Temurnikar, Chairman and Co-Founder, Global Schools Foundation (GSF); Mr Kaustubh Bodhankar Deputy CEO GSF; GIIS Country Director (Singapore), Mr Vasudeva; Principal Ms Khanna; Vice-principal Ms Varghese, among others.

The Sports Meet concluded with games for the parents and an enthralling applause by all present for the success of the Annual Sports Day. The flag was lowered by Physical Education (PE) teacher and handed over to Principal with positive thoughts for next Annual Sports Day.
