Ethnic day – a colourful and vibrant celebration

EC May NL

Queenstown primary campus was full on lively on 17th October 2017 as the school was celebrating Ethnic Day. The corridors and classrooms were decorated in a traditional way. Students were in full enthusiasm as they are excited to enjoy the activities with energy and passion.

This year the events were planned in such a way that the celebration of Diwali - the festival of lights was the main focus. It was also a way to teach the students from other cultures, the significance of the festival of lights, celebrated by various Indian communities around the world.

The day started with an assembly presentation by class 6C. They focused on the message of resolving conflicts among neighbours and friends by celebrating festivals together. The events for the day included Thoran and lantern making, preparation of Tray rangoli, and recycled artwork using shredded papers.

Students came in ethnic costumes. Girls were dressed in Ghaghara, Punjabi dress and traditional Sarees and the boys wore kurtas, dhotis and even jeweled turbans, like those worn by kings in ancient times. This added to the grandeur of the costume parade. Students of classes 5 & 6 engaged the younger students in traditional and forgotten games like indoor games like hopscotch, Ludo etc.

The interclass dance competition was another attraction where students competed with their peers. All the classes danced on traditional folk songs. The day’s events came to an end with the mass garbha performance where all students and teachers came together in mass display of this traditional dance form. Students also shared traditional savouries and sweets that they had brought from home.

The main message of the celebration was to respect the culture & tradition and be connected with our roots.
