Saluting the Spirit of Non-Voilence; GIIS Noida celebrates 100 years of Champaran Satyagrah

Ram Madhav LLS

Champaran Satyagrah was the first anti-british campaign started by Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi against the Britishers, to fight for the rights of the farmers of the Champaran district, Bihar. Since farmers during the British Raj were forced by law to plant and grow at least 3 out of 20 parts of their land with indigo, the whole scenario between Indian farmers and British planters/estate owners had gone bitter to worse. Rebel movements by farmers against the indigo law had started to result in ruthless suppression of the acts. Thus, introducing Mahatma Gandhi’s intervention in the same.

Commemorating completion of 100 years of Champaran Satyagrah in a special assembly at Global Indian International School (GIIS), Noida today, Grade 8 students of the campus paid a heartfelt tribute to the efforts of Mahatma Gandhi, which freed farmers from the debasing laws of the Britishers.

Beginning with the celebrations for such a historic event in India’s history, significance and the reason behind celebrating the day with so much pride and honour was shared by the students.   Antara, Aman, and Saksham from 8th grade presented a detailed power point presentation, which was followed by a beautiful song sung by our school choir that exhibited the spirit and determination of Indigo farmers during their fight against the Britishers.

Concluding the celebrations, a video clip from the movie Gandhi was shown to students to portray the charisma of Gandhiji with which he fought against evil without violence. He was a man who shook biggest of rulers with his simple living and three mottos of life i.e. truth, non-voilence, and determination. The objective behind conducting this special assembly was to highlight the efforts Gandhiji had put to resolve the miseries of landless peasants, small cultivators, women, etc. of champaran. The intent was to make students understand the struggle Gandhiji went through while fighting for peasants during 1917.

As a part of the Mahatma Gandhi Centre of Universal Values (MGCUV), our students across globe are educated on principals and teachings laid by Mahatma Gandhi. Inculcating strong virtues, values and moral ethics in our students, the MGCUV centre educates the youth about non-violence ways that are more relevant in the world today.
