World Population Day was observed by the Maths Aryabhattta club of Global Indian International School (GIIS), Noida. A special assembly was conducted by the club members to bring forth the ill effects of population explosion and educate students about preventive measures to handle this problem of national concern.
The special assembly started with thought of the day and morning news followed by a power point presentation by grade 5 students to highlight the root causes and ill effects of population explosion. The presentation was included measures taken by the Indian government to control the rising issue discussed. A small and interesting video clip was shown to children to understand the effects of rising population on entire environmental system and development.
A quiz competition based on the presentation and video clip shown was organized to test children on their presence of mind and alertness. Apart from the special assembly conducted, many in class activities were conducted for grade 3, 4 and 5 students. Grade 3 students were engaged in “drawing the flag” activity where they drew flags of four different countries and added their total population mathematically. Since it was a Maths Aryabhatta Club initiative, each activity was based on mathematical calculations.
Grade 4 students were engaged in rounding off activity in which they brought pictures of four states of India and its population presented on A-4 sheet. Grade 5 students did a pie diagram activity in which they had drawn pie diagrams depicting % wise population of major states of India. All the activities helped them understand that almost all the problems in world is due to over population of countries.
The objective behind conducting such assemblies and activities is to acquaint our students with issues of global concerns, so that they can take corrective measures and educate people around them.
