Building a balcony bird house; iCare activity at GIIS Noida

GIIS Tokyo students participate in PYP CCA Open Day
“The bird is powered by its own life and by its motivation.”

The life of a bird is quite fascinating to observe. They lay eggs and bring their young ones to life in their nests, which is not a permanent place for it to live for life. Birds leave their nests once their young ones grow and take charge of their own life. It’s quite fascinating to believe that most of the lot use a nest just once and never return back (but few do use as they keep building their home for years and long).

To sensitize tiny tots of Global Indian International School (GIIS), Noida on saving the bird species from extinction, building a bird house activity was organized by the pre-primary staff in the school. The activity revolved around creating a bird house in the school area, to give a safe place to birds so that they can dwell, and build on their family keeping the species alive.

This activity gave our students an opportunity to understand how they can help them by providing a small space in their backyards. They also learned about where birds like building nests, the materials they use, and a nest must look like.

During the circle time routine, respective teachers discussed multiple facts about the birds like why do they build nests, how they feed their young ones, etc. the concept of 3Rs i.e. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle was also reinforced i.e. how left over materials like Milk cartons, Paper cups & plates, Shoe box, Juice cartons, Popsicles and Orange peel can be used for making bird house and feeder.

After creating an eco-friendly bird house behind the school play area, children along with teachers participated in the rhyme singing session where they sang the “The Wren House” rhyme. Through these activities, children learned about their role in saving the environment and making it accessible for all things living. As they created the bird feeder using the left over materials and understood its purpose, the sight of pigeon pecking grains from the bird feeder they created made them feel more responsible towards the animals, for their little help can save its species from extinction.
