The chapter on Microbes in the traditional learning pattern is generally introduced through Biology text book, various sketches and viewing under microscope. For higher studies in areas related to Micro-Biology, Genetic Engineering and medical etc., study of Microorganisms is the core. To develop interest in students of Grades VII and VIII, the chapter was introduced in an innovative manner across all Global Indian International School India campuses. Students from Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chinchwad, Noida, Indore and Surat presented a collaborative project on the topic using subjects like English, Hindi, Science, Social Studies, Art and Performing Arts. The core content comprised various types of microbes, their structure, reproduction pattern and the advantages and disadvantages caused by them. This inter-curricular approach helps in addressing the learning needs by catering to multiple intelligences in children.
The final projects were presented by each team via video conference. GIIS Bangalore was the first to present the project with the help of a power point presentation and used charts to highlight the important features. GIIS Chinchwad was the second to present the project. They used a digital newsletter on the topic of Micro-organism, conducted interview related to Bio-terrorism by creating a newsroom environment. GIIS Surat presented a skit enacting as the different types of microorganisms and introduced the benefits and harm caused by the microbes in an easy and comprehensive way. GIIS Noida presented a video, a power point presentation, narrating the concept through an innovative end-rhyming poem. They used models and charts to supplement their content. GIIS Ahmedabad used power point, rhyme, song and puppetry to present the project. GIIS Indore presented the concept by using a power point presentation and a song on the topic of microorganism. After every presentation there was a question-and-answer session for the teams.
The competition was judged by a panel of judges, both external and internal subject matter experts. The efforts of students were appreciated by them. The use of Britannica to extract content, diagrams, videos, pictures and presentation style impacting the quality of presentation as well as assimilation took the presentation to the next level.
Eventually, each team was evaluated on parameters like innovative presentation, optimal use of resources, presentation style in terms of pronunciation, language, team dynamics and conceptual approach. It was a tough choice as each team did an excellent job. Finally the winners were; GIIS Chinchwad in the First position, GIIS Bangalore and GIIS Noida had a tie for Second position. Third position was won by GIIS Ahmedabad. Special prize in performing arts was given to GIIS Surat and Indore.
“Learning through projects becomes easy and accelerated as the students are completely involved in the process. The Inter-campus competition is a knowledge sharing platform for students. It helps in personality development as well as facing winning and losing. They learn from each other and are better geared up for the next topic.” Said Ms. Sunita Jaisingh, National Academic Head-Scholastics, GIIS India.
