World Literacy Day 2012

"Literacy is not the end of education, nor even the beginning.
It is only one of the means whereby men and women can be educated.
Literacy in itself is no education"                                                                         - Mahatma Gandhi

On the auspicious day of Gandhi Jayanti, the students of GIIS Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia were all set for the dual celebration of World Literacy Day and International Non-violence Day. Nearly eighteen students of different age groups, ranging from six to fourteen, put in a tremendous effort to celebrate a five-day-long illuminating Literacy Programme conducted for the GIIS Housekeeping staff, which culminated on 2nd October.

The Valedictory function commenced with the favouritebhajan of Mahatma Gandhi, commemorating his ideology and philosophy on the ‘dignity of labour’. The Indian song rendered with due respect by the Persian students, and the unanticipated entry of Master Yashraj in the guise of Gandhiji, was a sensational moment for one and all. ‘Literacy is not just reading and writing. It moves beyond the text.’
The noble gesture of knowledge-sharing was epitomized through the candle lighting ceremony, a ‘journey of light’, followed by the oath-taking service.

A PowerPoint presentation by the Student In-charge of the Resource Centre, Master Alireza, was made on the day-wise Literacy programme conducted from 8th to 14th September 2012 in which the helpers were made to feel special.

Students briefed them on issues of health & hygiene, budgeting & banking. They, being duly felicitated with souvenirs, left the dais with a mixed feeling of soared self-esteem and happiness.
