Creating a general awareness about our environment and society is an integral part of Kindergarten education as the age between three and five is impressionable when children can emulate their elders and imbibe values offered to them.
To encourage this, the Kindergarten Department of GIIS, Kuala Lumpur has adopted a theme every month on general awareness. In the month of June, the teachers talked about the various community helpers, their roles and how they are important to us.
Teachers made puppets to teach the role of community helpers to make the activity fun and interactive. Children enjoyed singing songs related to the theme.
‘Show and Tell’ activities were also conducted in which children enthusiastically talked about their favourite community helper. Many of them wanted to be teachers, fire-fighters, policemen and doctors.
The activity not only made them fervent learners, but also opened a new window of awareness about the people around us, and the many ways in which they contribute.
