Global Indian International School (GIIS) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia hosted the GIIS Leadership Lecture Series on 09 June 2015 with acclaimed actor R Madhavan. The rousing event witnessed students’ excitement for having the talented and admired actor amongst them.

Mr Madhavan was received by Mr Manoj Nair, Country Director, GIIS Malaysia and Principal, Ms Mamta Bhargava. Other dignitaries present during the event included Mr Manish Jain, Operations Director, GIIS Malaysia, who escorted the guests to the auditorium for a student interaction session.
Mr Madhavan paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding the latter’s statue, and was welcomed to the school with an energetic lion dance, which is a symbol of prosperity and wealth. The programme highlights included a campus tour - where Mr Madhavan interacted with students who enthusiastically welcomed him by waving placards and his photos, followed by a visit to the new library. While addressing students, Mr Madhavan said, “Always be happy and if you are sad then remember ‘All is Well,’ this is a mantra for a happy life.”
This was followed by an interactive session with senior students, which commenced with a Malay welcome dance depicting ‘Malaysia, Truly Asia’ and a scintillating dance on Mr Madhavan’s movies songs. Mr Madhavan, in his address to students, traced his journey from a passionate teacher to an impeccable actor and a doting family man. He acknowledged the unique role that teachers contribute in the life of students. Being a trained public speaker, he spoke swiftly while interacting with students.
During the Q&A session, Mr Madhavan answered all the questions spontaneously, which kept the students spellbound. Some of the questions were to the effect, how he developed the linguistic skills, how he was able to convince his parents about his career choice and his advice for youth on PETA. Kavin Shah of Class 12, GIIS Kuala Lumpur Campus, asked Mr Madhavan about his ability to bring life to the character he plays, to which Mr Madhavan replied, “I put a bit of myself in every role I do. I infuse different aspects of my life to make character look more real.”
While replying to another student’s question, Arvind from Class 12, GIIS Kuala Lumpur Campus, who asked about Mr Madhavan’s role model, he said, “Mr Kamal Hasan and Mr Amitabh Bachchan are my role models. They both are dedicated actors and are masters in the field of acting.”
Mr Madhavan asked students, not to lose hope on their ability, respect and be polite to all around you, be aware of the situation, be passionate, and try to accumulate one of the main assets in one’s life. Mr Madhavan is an actor, writer, film producer, and television host. He has received two Filmfare Awards, Tamil Nadu State Film Award along with other recognition and nominations from various organisations. He has been described as one of the few actors in India who is able to achieve pan-Indian appeal, appearing in films of seven different languages.
The GIIS Leadership Lecture Series instilled confidence in students to work hard and achieve their full potential in their respective fields. The visit was a motivational and memorable experience for the students. Previous speakers under the GIIS Leadership Lecture series include industry stalwarts and achievers like Sachin Tendulkar - legendary cricketer, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam - former President of India, A R Rahman - Academy Award winning musician, Nobel Laureate Professor Richard Ernst, Former RBI Governor Dr D Subbarao, interim BCCI President Sunil Gavaskar, and tennis stars Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna, among others.
