Cambridge Science Week 2016 – “Magical Science”

The Cambridge Science Week 2016 with the theme “Magical Science” was a five-day celebration of science - featuring fascinating, entertaining and engaging events and activities for students, teachers and parents of Global Indian International School Cambridge.

There were various activities and programs organised during the Science Week. The programs were:

1. The Opening Ceremony
The well decorated auditorium was full of students and teachers and our little emcees from Year 2 and 3 charmed everyone with their introductory speech.The much awaited Magical Science Week was officially inaugrated by the Principal Ms.Mamta on 28th of March 2016. Balloons popped and confetti’s rained when Ms. Mamta cut the ribbon to reveal the revolving logo of Magical Science Week.The excitement of all the students turned into an anticipatory silence when students of Year 10 stood out with their time travel Sci-Fi play titled “Today’s Science Was Yesterday’s Magic”. Shortly after the Opening Ceremony, the Science Week Mascot, Mr Einstein visited the students and interacted with them.

2. Treasure Hunt
Students of Year 1 – 6 participated in a Treasure Hunt where they were required to complete a set of scientific tasks in a group. The first group to complete all the tasks accurately was given a prize.

3. Crime Scene Investigation
Students of Year 7-10 participated in a Crime Scene Investigation titled “Who Stole the Science Week Mascot?” In groups, they had to investigate which teacher of the Cambridge section stole the Science Week Mascot by interrogating them and analysing a set of evidences given to them. The first group to solve the mystery was given a prize.

4. Quiz of the Day
A science quiz question was posted on the Science Week bulletin board during lunch time for three consecutive days. Students were given an answer sheet to write down their answers. Three winners were chosen from each class.

5. Innovation Competition
The Innovation Competition was a test of creativity and scientific knowledge of the students. The students came up with many exciting, mind blowing innovation and some where beyond expectations. Some of the innovations were  Hydraulic Excavator Model, The Tooth Gun, Bottle Rocket, Home Made Projector and Solar Oven.

6. Class experiments
The Science teachers conducted many fun filled experiments with their students during their Science lessons the entire week. Some of the experiments were the Lemon Volcano, Colour Changing Milk, Bouncing Egg, Ferro Magnet, Elephant Toothpaste, Hand Warmer, Confounding Colours and Oxidation & Reduction Experiment. The students truly enjoyed these activities and it helped them to enhance their scientific skills.

7. The Finale
The closing ceremony of the Science Week 2016 was a fun filled and exciting event. There was an Innovation Fair where the students displayed their own innovations for the parents of GIIS Cambridge to view. The science knowledge of parents and teachers of GIIS Cambridge were then challenged with a quiz. Later, the students, teachers and parents were all entertained with a video presentation which was a wrap up of the Science Week 2016 and a magnificent magic show by the students. After that, the prize giving ceremony was held where Mr Manoj Nair,  Country Director of GIIS Malaysia presented gifts and certificates to students, parents & teachers.

Overall, the Cambridge Science Week 2016 was an opportunity for students, teachers and parents of GIIS Cambridge to join together to enjoy and explore the magical aspects of science under one roof.
