Students of GIIS Indore participate at the International Model United Nations (IIMUN) convention ‘15

Day 1: October 9th, 2015 was marked with the grand opening ceremony of Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) Indore at Brilliant Convention Centre, Choithram International School which witnessed a participation of over 1000 students.

IIMUN is one of the India@aps@s leading brand in education conference management having organized the Asia@aps@s Largest Youth Conference in Mumbai amongst the many other conferences. Being a conference for the youth by the youth, it is run completely by students in age group of 16-22 years. It provides the youth a platform to voice their opinions by forwarding their drafted resolutions to the United Nations. It is also the first MUN in Asia to have its own procedure.

IIMUN - Indore Chapter 2 witnessed the overwhelming presence of a great number of delegates in the history of any IIMUN chapter comprising renowned dignitaries, Executive Board Members and participants of different schools. This Conference has given the students an amazing opportunity to understand the process of International Debate, Working of UN, Leadership and Public Speaking Skills as valuable educational tools for cooperative learning. All the renowned schools from Indore, Guwahati, Bilaspur and various other cities had sent their delegates for the conference. The delegates were dressed in formal attire for the ceremony. GIIS Indore had participated with a team of 15 students under the guidance of Ms. Priyashri Dubey.

Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan, Honorable speaker of Lok Sabha graced the ceremony in the capacity of Chief Guest. She motivated the students to understand their duties and responsibilities towards the nation. India is the only country in the world with maximum youth force that can do wonders in the various fields. Rishabh Shah, Founder-Director of IIMUN, who is also a real life example of youth leadership, addressed the audience and emphasized on the youth of India to work for international issues and peace. Former IGT winner, Mrs. Ragini Makkar and her dance group performed on the Ganesh Stuti. There was a fantastic dance performance by Martin’s Dance group. Finally the stage got electrified with the performance of Leslie Lewis, Mascot of IIMUN. The young students were enthralled by his rocking performance. GIIS students were happy to be a part of this large conference.

Day 2, October 10th, 2015. The day commenced with delegates of various countries dressed in traditional costumes moving to their committees. Committee session started with a speech by Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. Participants included officials from committees like Security Council, UNODC, WHO, UNICEF, DISEC, ECOFIN, UNHSC, BCCI and LOK SABHA. One by one the delegates discussed their country’s opinion over International Issues and the functioning and working of not only UN but also of various Governments in the different countries.

The students participated in a wonderful trip to Janak Jimmy McGilligan centre for Sustainable Development. The Janak Jimmy McGilligan centre is a micro model of sustainable development transformed around one acre of land on a small hill by Dr.(Mrs) Janak Palta. It is a no garbage area and least use of energy resources centre. The centre runs under supervision of Mrs. Palta and her two intelligent associates from tribal area, Mr. Rajendra and Mrs. Nanda. They explained the students about the various energy saving equipments used at the centre. They grow crops, vegetables, fruits and many more things to fulfill their requirements. They have even grown many medicinal plants, spices and herbs. They have domestic animals like cow and goat of their own to meet their dairy needs. As an alternative of LPG, they are using cakes made up of newspaper, hay, dried leaves etc. The maximum electricity supply is met with the help of Wind Mill that produces 2 KW of electricity per day. They even use solar panels for electricity. The centre has different kind of Solar Cookers which is beyond anyone’s imagination. The Faculty Advisors of all schools present were amazed that at such a place this miracle can happen. Mrs. Janak also showed the students a presentation on her journey. She has received President’s award for her noble work in the field of Environment and Energy Conservation. After this visit the students came back to Choithram International School to attend the committee sessions where utmost care was taken by the volunteers to fulfill their requirements. All the faculty members heard the opinions of our young leaders. In the session many motions and challenges were raised. All the participants were actively participating in the debate. Mr. Rishabh Shah, the Director of IIMUN, was himself chairing the session of Security Council. Mr. Jayneesh Shah was continuously meeting all the delegates, faculties and volunteers to provide best possible help. Choithram International had organized a workshop on twitter and facebook to post the views about IIMUN. After a long brainstorming session of discussion, debate and issues, IIMUN in collaboration with CI had arranged socials (DJ Night) for all the participants to lighten the mood. A grand dinner with music and dance changed the mood of all the participants.

Day 3, October 11th, 2015. The final day of session had come and the young delegates spent the day to discuss about the working papers, resolutions etc. This session was the last note for the day for the students, and the debate turned more serious. This exercise taught the students to come on consensus even if they have personal differences. Even before the official lunch of the final session the delegates were found discussing the voting, coalition etc. The day ended with Closing Ceremony, which had certificate distribution for participants in the committee. The Best Delegate Award, Special Mention, Special Commendation for all the committees were given in Prize Distribution Ceremony.

IIMUN Indore has given dreams to many students to aspire for a great future in the field of Politics and Administration. These platforms are assisting to transform the young generation for better future of the country. IIMUN plans to have a session in UN Assembly at New York, America in the year 2016. This is a matter of honor and opportunity for all Indians where they will select 400 students from all over India to participate in this session.
