Looking beyond the Periphery of Prejudices

Looking beyond the Periphery of Prejudices

Students of class VI from GIIS Indore and GIIS Surat campuses attended an engaging session on socio-political matters led by Ms. Banani Das Deka, Social Science Teacher, GIIS Bangalore.

Diversity and discrimination is a social evil and a way of the real world. The students were exposed to cases of prejudice and stereotypes through simulation of real life situations over video-conference.

Movies reflect the message of the society; hence clips were shown to children to present a complete view of each situation. The concept of @aps@prejudice@aps@ and @aps@stereotype@aps@ is vague and abstract for the young minds without examples that they can identify with. "After a few introspective sessions I felt that, Chetan Bhagat@aps@s 2 States, can give me necessary platform to explain the above concept of cultural discrimination basis race and place. I tried to explain the concepts with the help of two clips from the movie 2 States. The first clip chosen was to explain the term prejudice and the second one explained the term stereotype." Said Ms. Banani.

Students from GIIS Indore brainstormed on the information given on the first clip. They precisely predicted that prejudice can lead to difference and inequality in the society while the students from GIIS Surat brainstormed on the information given on the second clip. They rightly pointed out the consequences of stereotype. The student@aps@s report consisted of a worksheet, which was given to all the participants in the beginning of the session. This worksheet served two purpose for the facilitator. First, it helped me to assess the learning of the learner and second, as a facilitator, the teacher got a feedback on her delivery as well. The teachers of the respective campuses jotted down their understanding in student report sheet. The outcome of the lesson was that all the children attending the session took an oath that, their decisions will always be free from @aps@Prejudice and Stereotype@aps@. Lesson well learnt!

Knowledge Exchange Programme is a platform that connects minds over boundaries and is indeed an enriching experience for one and all.
