Puppet Show - Do it Right, Save WATER and LIGHT

letter update

A puppet show titled “Do it Right; Save WATER and LIGHT” was put up by the kindergarten teachers in GIIS, Balestier campus’ AV Room on 27th July, 2017.

Water is a resource that much of the developed world takes for granted, but that many in the developing world struggle to find enough of, every day.

Similarly wasting electricity is also a cause of grave concern. It is caused by leaving things ON when they are not being used. This means leaving lights ON when we’re not in the room, or leaving the TV ON or plugged into the mains when we are not in the house.

The aim was to -

  • educate the students about the importance of water and electricity in our lives
  • depict how the wastage of water and electricity will adversely affect and endanger our health, our environment and our planet as a whole
  • share ways and methods to save water and electricity
  • foster an enduring interest in caring for the world around us

Puppetry was the chosen medium to convey the message as -

  • puppets have long been a versatile means of expression, instruction and communication
  • It can be a powerful tool for inducing social action and bringing in, a change in thoughts, behaviour, mindset, etc.
  • puppets have a universal appeal, where birds and animals are welcome
  • we accept a message being conveyed by the puppet without even realising we are learning
  • the fact that they are characters and not people allows them to be a perfect medium for conversing about personal or sensitive issues
  • this means they create a world we can relate to and identify in ourselves; however we are not threatened, offended or embarrassed by the puppet or the story being told
  • puppets can stimulate children's imaginations, encourage play and interactions

The kindergarten students enjoyed watching the Puppet Show. Some of the students drew pictures in their Drawing Block depicting their understanding of how to save water and electricity as well as their favourite puppet character. They spoke about how they can do their part to save the environment.
