Sony Creative Science Award (SCSA) aims to develop and promote interest as well as creativity in science among primary school students in Singapore. They organize the Singapore's largest toy-making competition for primary school students every year, jointly in collaboration with Science Centre Singapore and the Sony Group of Companies in Singapore, with the support of the Ministry of Education.  

This year's theme of the competition for SCSA 2017 was MIX, MATCH AND SURPRISE. About 4000 entries from primary schools in Singapore were participated and out of which just 30 entries were shortlisted by the Science Centre.  

The Vice Principal of GIIS Balestier, Ms Savinder Kaur, said “Out of the 30 shortlisted finalists, I am extremely happy and proud to share that Moniish Murugappa of class 3F from GIIS Balestier has won the second prize, in ScizKid (Primary 3-6) category, at the SCSA Ceremony held on August 3, 2017. This is truly a great moment for GIIS Balestier to watch Moniish receive the award from Mr. Ng Chee Meng, Minister for Education (School) and Second Minister for Transport. For his outstanding creation, Moniish will receive an all-expense paid trip for himself and his family to Japan by SCSA. His toy – MAGNETIC TOP is based on the simple principle that magnetic substances are attracted to a magnet. “

A replica of Moniish Murugappa's toy "Magnetic Top" was presented as a memento to the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ng Chee Meng, Minister for Education (School) and Second Minister for Transport. 

In appreciation, GIIS Balestier also received a Cheque of S$1000 for producing the 2^nd Prize Winner and school's effort & commitment to support the students.
