GIIS students win hearts at the Dancing Stars of Singapore

GIIS Balestier students participated in the recently conducted Pan Singapore dancing event named, Dancing Stars of Singapore, for the age category of 9-12 years, organized by Dancing Planet, one of the famous dance companies in Singapore. The event was held at Singapore Discovery Centre on August 19, 2017.

The aim of the event was to encourage and bring forth the talented dancers on stage, in various dance forms like Bollywood, Hip-hop, Folk and Semi classical. The contestants exhibited an eclectic mix of dance forms ranging from hip-hop to Indian semi classical to folk to belly dancing. It was nothing short of a visual treat to watch them swaying to different language blockbusters, western chart toppers and old melodies. Different schools Island wide participated in the competition. The Competition was judged by an elite panel of 7 Judges comprising of prestigious names in the Singapore Dancing Arena.

Suniksha Sriram of class 5C bagged the first place in solo category B. She danced to a medley of everybody’s all-time favourite, Madhuri Dixit’s foot tapping numbers.

Saumyaa Sengupta of 4C bagged the 2nd prize and she was the youngest in her Category to win accolades. Saumyaa had to get selected through a Semi Final Round comprising of 60-70 children. It took a special effort as she had a leg injury and overcame that to qualify in the Final. There were 17 Finalists and Saumyaa stood 2nd amongst them. She performed a prayer song (Ek Onkar) and a Sufiyana Qawali that was enjoyed and appreciated by everyone. Saumyaa’s versatility in both the Semifinals and the Finals were the key highlights as per the judges

Saloni Samel of 5C won the third prize in the same category.

Eshana Suresh of Class 5-A performed a group Shiv Tandav dance and secured third position. She and her group danced to the groove of Shiv Tandav Stotram, which describes the Hindu God Shiva's power and beauty. Girls were absolutely stunning in their black attire, neatly tucked hairdo with Lord Shiva’s “third eye” painted on their foreheads.

The participants were extremely honoured to receive the trophy from the Judge Ms Seema Kapoor, a renowned dancer and the Managing Director of Dance Planet, Singapore.
