A healthy mind in a healthy body!

Parents often worry about what their kids are eating since nutrition is so important to good health. Children tend to be picky eaters, liking food that is easy on the palate. It takes patience and a strategy to get them to eat a wide range of nutritious foods. Eating healthy, like any other good habit, needs to be introduced to children from a very young age. GIIS Ahmedabad, as a part of its holistic approach towards education introduced to the Pre-Primary students, the merits of eating a healthy meal in order to remain fit through an engaging weeklong workshop, ‘Healthy Food Week’

The teachers addressed various areas of healthy eating like choosing the right food from all the food groups, identifying junk food, the problems children face due to unhealthy eating, daily meal routine starting from breakfast to dinner, nutrition value of staple diet, table manners and sharing food. Each activity was meticulously planned keeping in mind the attention span of the little ones and made interesting by adding props like puppets. The children laughed and absorbed every word that came from their favourite cartoon characters. There were other activities like ‘show and tell’ and the children recognized vegetables and fruits and food groups. The most exciting activity for the children was ‘GIIS Food Bazaar’. It was a hands-on experience where children shared a healthy pot-luck. They happily ate pulav, stuffed parathas, wheat bread sandwiches, sprout salad, fruits, corn chat, dhoklas and other home-made dishes which they shared with their friends. They had variety of healthy eating options.

This was a perfect exercise of sensorial learning when all five senses of sound, sight, touch, smell and taste were working in unison. Their social and life skills were also developed as they served and shared food with their friends.
