Little readers learn to read books, live books...

SMART Campus

You live a thousand lives, see a thousand dreams, and visit a thousand places by the means of books. A book conceals within its pages the power to transform, enlighten, and imagine. It gives its readers the eyes to see what others can’t and the opportunity to be it all - the creator, the audience, the hero, the bad man, and the judge. So you live many characters and don many hats, and gather along the way all the treasurable experiences which you stumble upon in a book!

Giving the young students their chance to live a book they will always remember as the first book they read, the Kindergarten teachers took up various facets of reading through a weeklong ‘Book Nook’ activity. The teachers created a cozy reading corner, stacked up with pictorial and short-story books. The reading corner had a shed made of craft papers and below were kept soft cushions to lay and enjoy a book. The Kindergarten children were given the time to just gaze and reflect at pictures in a book and fantasize their favourite book characters. Some were seen smiling coyly while some were too engrossed while they read. And, when they were done, the teacher picked up a book and read it out to the students, ending the reading session with story-telling.

Not limiting the ‘Book Nook’ activity to reading alone, the teachers planned age-specific activities like acting rhymes, becoming book characters, story-telling, and visiting a book store. Focusing on integrated learning, all activities were integrated with learning words, enacting, story-telling, good manners, etiquettes, counting, and English of course! The idea behind ‘Book Nook’ was to make the little students fall in love with books and live each book they read. And, so to go beyond to periphery of pages, the students dedicated a day to their favourite book character and dressed up just like them. There were little spidermans, cindrellas, red riding hoods, cha cha chaudharys, and hulks, who looked amazing in their fancy garbs and also spoke a few famous lines of the characters they were dressed as; they lived the book they read or just gazed!

The teachers gave their young students a chance to experience reading, seeing, and living a book. They instilled in them good reading habit by leading them to the world of books!
