Children are a curious lot. Questions to them is conversation. And, the concoction of curiosity and questions makes place for intelligence in the pitcher of knowledge. Today, children have ample gadgets to quench their thirst for knowledge and have the entire world on their fingertips. Ipads, mobile phones, YouTube, laptops, television, etc. the list is long but not rich. The pleasure that comes from reading and the lasting impression that an interesting passage leaves, is beyond comparison. Nothing is more commendable than to habituate children with reading.

And, in a brilliant effort to persuade students to gather knowledge and be aware of the happenings in the world, Global Indian International School (GIIS) Ahmedabad organised an inter-House ‘GK-NIE Quiz competition’. Drawing students to read newspapers early in life helps them to acquaint themselves to the world they live in. All the students of classes 3 to 8 participated in the preliminary round of the quiz and from them the final round participants were selected.

The quiz was held in the Multil-Purpose Hall (MPH) of the school wherein the finalists were seated on the stage. The questions were displayed on the huge screen on stage with a set timer. The uniqueness of this quiz competition was that the GK questions put forth to the finalists were picked from the NIE newspaper, a students’ edition of the Times of India. Questions from politics, geography, celebrities and the knowledge of all the elements of NIE newspaper, formed the core of the quiz which definitely was a success!

With the response from students and the parents, GIIS is now looking to organise an inter-school quiz competition. “This a very good initiative by the school. The children reading the newspaper regularly now and we feel that they are also developing a habit of equipping themselves with knowledge from all around the world,” said a group of parents who had come to witness the quiz competition.
