Building Bridges

Earth Day
Building Bridges

A wonderful project-based learning and sharing session, ‘Building Bridges’ was organized through video conferencing for grade IV students of GIIS global campuses to participate and collaborate on innovative ideas for ‘Building Bridges’.

GIIS Balestier campus opened the session by presenting their ideas on ‘Building Bridges’ across nations to narrow the gaps by incorporating a culture through peace. The underlying thought of their presentation was that of ‘understanding’. Understanding of languages and other cultures help build bridges. It is the fastest way to bring the world closer to truth. Through understanding, people will be able to see their similarities before differences. They also highlighted United Nations’ objective of building bridges to solve global problems like reducing child mortality, empowering female gender, creating a new energy for future, securing peace and human rights, and promoting technology and innovation to improve health outcomes.

The students of GIIS Noida campus presented their project using a power point presentation and other props to explain the types of bridges like beam bridge, truss bridge, arch bridge, cantilever bridge and suspension bridge. A week-long activity was held at GIIS Noida campus for students to make 3D models of various bridges. They also presented importance of shapes like an arch, triangle or a cylinder used in these bridges and the mechanics behind their working. While making these models students got a better understanding of the structure of these bridges from an engineering perspective.

GIIS Ahmedabad campus made 18 different scale-models of bridges from across the world, capturing minute details with precision. Students presented in multiple groups and the campus saw larger participation in any video conference led session so far. The entire class participated in the activity. Hands-on-learning helps students understand and learn better by use of multiple intelligences and students are happy and excited to learn through such participative projects.

GIIS Bangalore campuses also showcased a variety of models of bridges. The students emphasized on the use of different construction material and the processes involved in ensuring stability of the bridges as they learnt about the various forces acting on bridges like tension and compression, engineering design, structure and types. They spoke on the history of invention of bridges leading to evolution and the key features of various bridges across the world.

“It was a fruitful learning experience for grade IV students through projects as the approach is always unique. While GIIS Balestier campus dealt with the topic from the perspective of Community Connection other campuses presented on Mechanics of Bridges. The importance of such sessions is learning time management, inducing self- discipline and spirit of team-work.” quoted GIIS National Scholastic Head Ms. Sunita Jaisingh as she moderated the session.
